Eating Disorders Treatment Center Provides Education and Increases Awareness

Orange County, CA (January 13, 2011) – An estimated 11 million people—10 million women and 1 million men—in the U.S. have eating disorders.  Eating disorders claim more lives each year than any other mental illness, with anorexia nervosa being the leading cause death for females between the ages of 15 and 24.  Rebecca’s House will be an active participant of Eating Disorders Awareness Week, which aims to spread eating disorders awareness just as the name implies, starting February 20th and ending on the 26th.

“Many people don’t understand how dangerous eating disorders are,” Founder and CEO of Rebecca’s House, Rebecca Cooper stated. “This country is seeing a major rise in an array of eating disorders in both young women and men and this is a very serious issue. We hope to provide education and awareness to gain support and save lives, and Eating Disorders Awareness Week is a great opportunity to work with other treatment centers to get the word out.”

Eating disorders can manifest at a very young age, starting as low as 12.  In one Canadian study involving 1739 girls aged 12 to 18, over one quarter of the group showed significant eating disorders symptoms.  Left untreated, up to 20% of eating disorders patients die prematurely, yet only 1 in 10 eating disorders patients receive proper treatment.
