Eating Disorder Treatment

With New Years comes the onslaught of the proverbial resolution. Ranging from being kinder, to getting a better job, to everyone’s favorite – losing weight – we make these declarations and, by February, they have gone by the wayside … but not for everyone. For some, the losing weight resolution becomes less about dropping a few pounds and more about achieving an impossible standard of being ultra thin. Add to that a barrage of ads touting diets and gyms at the beginning of the year, and it can easily enable someone to slide into an eating disorder or adversely impact someone who already suffers from anorexia or bulimia to seek treatment.

New Year’s resolutions can be traced back some 4,000 years; today, we make resolutions as a promise to do something to improve ourselves.  So, how can we make healthy resolutions that we can actually keep?

  • Pick One Thing – Don’t try to change everything about yourself all at once. For example, if your resolution is to lose weight, set a goal of five pounds for the year, or promise to walk two miles every day. Make small changes to your life that you can easily live with.
  • Prepare – Make a plan about how you are going to achieve your resolution. Research it, have what you need on hand, and realize that you will encounter problems, and that’s fine. Plan for issues that might come up, and create options that can easily be available to you.
  • Pals – Surround yourself with people who support and encourage you, and who want the best for you.  Solid and loving relationships are a key component to helping us realize our potential.

Setting New Year’s resolutions can be a slippery slope, but they can be achieved in a healthy manner. If you do have an eating disorder, the holidays and the New Year can be a really difficult time.
