How Can I Heal Through Helping Others?

Many of us who’ve struggled with eating disorders, addictions, and other conditions look for a way to gain a sense of self worth and confidence long after recovery. It may seem like an impossible goal for those of us who have struggled for a lifetime with these issues. But anyone can change and transform the way they see the world and themselves beginning with just a small effort. Start simply everyday by making an effort to be more aware of yourself and the world around you. A good way to do this, is by being of service to another person in need.

By volunteering, teaching, or just participating in an activity that benefits a good cause, you will increase your sense of purpose and begin feeling better about yourself. Our thoughts are often our own worst enemy and can really warp our perception of ourselves and the world. Engage with reality.  A good way to stay in touch with reality is to be active when you feel yourself being falling into a self destructive pattern. Not only will you be doing something good for your spirit, you will be contributing to a good cause as well.

There are so many opportunities out there to give back to the community. So whether you want to counsel others who suffer from eating disorders or addictions, help feed the homeless, or volunteer at a local animal shelter, you will ultimately gain a greater sense of well being and self worth through helping others. Get out of your head and do something of value in the world.  A deep sense of purpose is the key to building self confidence and reaching full recovery. But our sense of purpose is often communal in nature.  You can’t do life alone. So reach out to others in your community. You have unique talents that can really make a difference in someone’s life.
